Conor McGregor Prepares for UFC Comeback After Overcoming Personal Struggles

Conor McGregor is gearing up to return to the octagon after a lengthy hiatus, facing Max Holloway at UFC 329 on July 11. Many speculated that the Irish fighter might never compete again following his last match, which ended in a first-round TKO loss to Dustin Poirier in July 2021, during which he suffered a severe leg injury.

During his time away from the sport, the 37-year-old has dealt with various legal challenges, most notably being found liable in a high-profile civil trial related to a 2018 sexual assault case involving Nikita Hand. Despite these obstacles, McGregor expressed a sense of acceptance regarding his journey while appearing on "The Ariel Helwani Show." He stated, "God knows my heart and the things that I've gone through. I'm a young man, I came into all this, I forgive myself for what I — I forgive myself for disgracing the position that God put me in." He emphasizes that he has no regrets and feels grateful for the lessons learned along the way.

Though McGregor's name is synonymous with success in MMA—being a former two-division champion and the sport's top earner—he acknowledged the excesses that accompanied his fame. He described his current state as precarious, likening it to "being on a tightrope" as he navigates his personal demons. "Money isn't the end-all, be-all. It's not life, get me?” he remarked, asserting his intention to live a more modest lifestyle moving forward.

In his conversation, McGregor highlighted the importance of self-reflection and maintaining balance. He explained, "The rent is due every day," comparing his need for self-discipline to training for a fight. He conveyed that during his darkest moments, he found solace in his faith, saying, "It takes a deeper meaning when you hit rock bottom and there's nothing else there but God." This spiritual journey has helped him regain his footing.

As McGregor prepares to face Holloway, he aims to secure a victory for the first time since his 2020 win over Donald Cerrone, breaking a two-fight losing streak. He has also revealed plans for a subsequent match in April 2027, after which he may explore free agency as his current UFC contract expires.
