Corey Pereira Triumphs at Mexico Championship Nearly a Year After Wife's Passing

In a poignant victory, Corey Pereira claimed his first PGA Tour-sanctioned title in eight years at the Mexico Championship, held at La Hacienda Golf Club in Mexico City. This win comes almost a year after the tragic loss of his wife, Leah, who passed away from cancer in June 2025.

Pereira, 31, showcased his skills with an impressive six birdies, finishing the tournament with a score of 6-under 65. Reflecting on his journey, he stated, “If it weren't for golf, I would just be sitting in my room all day, like pouting and crying.” Leah, who fought a three-year battle with rhabdomyosarcoma, was just 28 when she died. Her struggle began with a diagnosis in October 2022, and despite multiple remissions, she ultimately lost her fight.

Throughout Leah's illness, Corey adjusted his golfing commitments but still managed to qualify for the 2023 U.S. Open, where Leah was present to support him. Recently, he entered the PGA Tour Q-School without any status and secured a place on the Americas list after performing well in the first stage. Following his victory in Mexico, he now ranks second on the Americas points list, marking a significant comeback in just his sixth sanctioned event since her passing.

Having turned professional in 2017, Pereira started his career strong on the Korn Ferry Tour but faced challenges in maintaining his status. “Getting to the Korn Ferry, that's the goal,” he mentioned, expressing his desire to reclaim his spot after a less-than-ideal previous season.

Pereira completed the tournament with a remarkable total of 22 under par, fending off runner-up Riley Lewis, who did not record a bogey in his last 29 holes but finished two shots behind Pereira. Mason Williams and Thomas Ponder followed closely in third and fourth place, respectively.

Concluding his reflections, Pereira affirmed his belief in his abilities, stating, “I know that I can play at a really high level.” His determination to succeed drives him forward, even in the face of personal grief.
