Critics Take Aim at Red Sox's Roster and Lineup Decisions

The Boston Red Sox kicked off the 2026 season boasting a roster filled with talent but also noticeable deficiencies. While the pitching staff has performed admirably, the lineup has struggled due to a lack of power and balance. Compounding these issues, injuries to key players Roman Anthony and Trevor Story have left the team further vulnerable.

Recent performances have highlighted these shortcomings, and after a disappointing sweep by the Tampa Bay Rays, the Red Sox find themselves at the bottom of the American League East with a record of 27-39, marking one of the poorest records in Major League Baseball.

In an article by Alex Speier for The Boston Globe published on June 10, several rival executives voiced their concerns about the Red Sox's roster decisions. "I can’t believe they are content going with so many [Triple-A] players — utility infielders — at the bottom of the lineup," one evaluator remarked. Another added, "I’m still confused on the Red Sox roster construction and truthfully how they thought it would turn out any different than it has. The holes that were there at the start of the season are still there."

The Red Sox offense has struggled significantly this season, ranking near the bottom of the league in several key metrics. The team's lack of depth and power is evident, especially as the lower portion of the lineup has posted an OPS below .700 in recent games. With the trade deadline approaching on August 3, the Red Sox have an opportunity to bolster their lineup, but time is running out to reverse their disappointing trajectory.
