Cubs Overcome Rockies with Power Surge, Bregman and Suzuki Shine

DENVER — The Chicago Cubs managed to halt a recent string of disappointing performances as they defeated the Colorado Rockies 9-3 on Thursday, thanks in part to significant contributions from Alex Bregman and Seiya Suzuki. With this win, the Cubs avoided a series sweep at Coors Field and improved their record to above .500.

Bregman, who has been striving for a breakout this season, finally showcased his power with a two-run home run in the seventh inning. This marked his sixth homer of the year and his first with a runner on base. Despite the success, Bregman expressed dissatisfaction, mentioning, “The whole series was better, still missed too many pitches in the heart of the plate.” He emphasized his usual performance level, noting that he typically has a much higher on-base percentage when facing hittable pitches.

The game’s momentum shifted in the fourth inning when Suzuki launched a grand slam off Rockies pitcher Ryan Feltner, giving the Cubs a 4-1 lead. This was Suzuki's third career grand slam and extended his hitting streak to eight games, during which he has maintained a .308 batting average. The Cubs added more runs with a pair in the fifth and a solo shot from catcher Carson Kelly in the eighth.

Right-hander Edward Cabrera contributed to the win by pitching 5 1/3 innings and allowing just two runs, both from solo homers. Manager Craig Counsell acknowledged the struggles of the team but expressed optimism about their potential, stating, "We have very good offensive players... Our players are the source of the optimism."

Bregman highlighted the need for improvement, noting, “We’re way better of a ball club than we’ve shown,” and expressed hope for continued success in future games. As the Cubs look to build on this victory, both Bregman and Suzuki seem poised to play crucial roles in their offensive resurgence.
