Dalton Knecht Hosts First Basketball Camp, Celebrates His Tennessee Roots

Excitement filled the Pratt Pavilion as chants of "Dalton! Dalton!" echoed through the venue, where around 150 young fans, many clad in No. 3 jerseys, eagerly awaited the arrival of Dalton Knecht. Upon his entrance, the crowd burst into applause. "This is really special to me," Knecht expressed. "To have my first camp, especially in Knoxville. You all gave so much to me. The biggest thing today is to have fun."

The inaugural Dalton Knecht Basketball Camp took place on June 13, marking the start of what the second-year NBA player hopes will become an annual tradition in the city that helped elevate him to fame. Knecht made it clear that the focus of the day was on the participants, steering clear of any discussions about his NBA journey or his current role with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Originally hailing from Thornton, Colorado, Knecht played two seasons at Northeastern Junior College and two at Northern Colorado before joining the Tennessee Volunteers. His year in Knoxville was nothing short of historic, as he averaged 21.7 points per game, led the SEC with a remarkable 25.5 points per game—the highest in 14 years—and became the first player in UT history to score 30 points in five consecutive games. His impressive performance earned him accolades, including unanimous SEC Player of the Year and a spot as a consensus First-Team All-American before being drafted 17th overall by the Lakers in 2024.

Despite having no obligation to return, Knecht chose to come back and give back to the community that embraced him. "They gave me a home to always come back to," he said, reflecting on the support he received. Attendees were thrilled to interact with him, whether through high-fives or participating in drills during the camp, which was run by Sean Green of Priority 1 Athletics and Jamal Richardson of JMR Basketball.

Participants engaged in various drills and were encouraged to work hard, with Richardson emphasizing, "Hard work is the foundation. Finding an appreciation for it is important." Parents, like Steven Miller, noted the valuable lessons their children learned, such as maintaining a positive attitude even when facing challenges. The camp concluded with an awards ceremony and a lengthy autograph session, where Knecht ensured he connected with every fan. "It's really special to me," he remarked about his role as a mentor, underscoring its significance for his family, particularly his mother.
