Danville Softball Clinches Division VI State Championship with Late Rally
AKRON – In a thrilling conclusion to the Division VI state softball championship, Danville emerged victorious over West Jefferson in a tense showdown that showcased exceptional pitching from both teams. The matchup, which took place on June 4, featured standout performances from Addy Bocock of Danville, a first-team all-state selection, and West Jefferson's Jenna Mannon, a Missouri commit and second-team all-state honoree.
Despite both teams demonstrating offensive prowess in their semifinal victories, the final match turned into a battle of the pitchers, with hits proving difficult to come by at Firestone Stadium. It wasn't until the top of the ninth inning that Danville broke the deadlock. Freshman catcher Morgan Hinkens delivered a crucial triple that hit the left-field wall, allowing senior first baseman Ruby Bartok to cross home plate for the game's first score. Hinkens later scored on an infield single from sophomore designated player Liz John, sealing a 2-0 win for Danville and marking the program's second state title, their first in 18 years.
As the game progressed, West Jefferson (25-6) made a late push in the bottom of the ninth. After Bocock struck out two batters in a row, Payton Kincade connected for a triple into the right-field corner. Danville made the strategic decision to intentionally walk Mannon, who had previously doubled in the seventh inning. However, Bocock struck out senior outfielder Makayla Messer to clinch the game, finishing with an impressive 15 strikeouts while allowing just four hits and no walks.
The match was characterized by a total of eight hits, with each team recording four. Mannon's dominant performance included 10 strikeouts and just two walks, as she retired 20 of the 21 batters she faced until hitting Bartok on an elbow in the ninth. The tension reached its peak when Mannon attempted to steal home during the seventh inning, but was thrown out, leading to extra innings.
This championship game highlighted the competitive spirit of high school softball in Ohio, with West Jefferson making its first appearance in a state final. Earlier on the same day, Hilliard Bradley claimed the Division I title with a 7-5 victory over Lancaster.
