Deion Sanders Opens Up About His Battle with Bladder Cancer

Deion Sanders, the head football coach for the Colorado Buffaloes, shared details about his bladder cancer diagnosis during a press conference last July. Known as Coach Prime, he revealed that he had surgery to remove his bladder, and Dr. Janet Kukreja, who leads urological oncology at the University of Colorado Cancer Center, confirmed that Sanders is now “cured of cancer.” Nearly a year later, he appeared on “Good Morning America” to reassure fans that he remains “healthy,” “cancer free,” and has “got my swagger back,” while also recounting the challenges he faced during his illness.

Reflecting on his experience, Sanders stated, “Last year at this time, I’m fighting cancer [and] didn’t know which way it was gonna go.” The Pro Football Hall of Famer expressed gratitude for overcoming the “tremendous and tumultuous battle” of cancer. He highlighted the emotional turmoil of transitioning from being an elite athlete, who uniquely played in both a Super Bowl and a World Series, to dealing with the reality of health issues, including moments of incontinence that left him feeling vulnerable.

Sanders recounted incidents of “peeing in the bed” and the embarrassment he felt in public settings when he feared he might have wet himself. He used his platform to encourage others to seek medical evaluations, emphasizing that early detection was crucial in achieving a positive outcome for him.

Known for his remarkable athletic career, Sanders was a six-time All-Pro cornerback and won two Super Bowls, one with the Dallas Cowboys and another with the San Francisco 49ers. He made history in 1996 by starting games as both a cornerback and wide receiver for Dallas.

Since taking the helm of the Colorado football program in December 2022, Sanders has led the Buffaloes to a 4-8 record in 2023, a 9-4 record in 2024, and a 3-9 finish last season. On “GMA,” he expressed eagerness for the upcoming season, stating he is focused on “winning.”
