Dennis Hull, Former Blackhawks Star and 1972 Summit Series Champion, Passes Away at 81
CHICAGO (AP) — Dennis Hull, the talented NHL forward known for his time with the Chicago Blackhawks and his role in Canada’s victory in the 1972 Summit Series, has died at the age of 81. His nephew, Bart Hull, shared the news on social media, and the Blackhawks acknowledged his passing through a statement from owner Rocky Wirtz. No further details regarding his death have been disclosed.
Hull dedicated the majority of his 14-season NHL career to the Blackhawks, playing 13 years with them before concluding his time in the league with the Detroit Red Wings. He was selected for five All-Star Games and earned a second-team All-Star designation for the 1972-73 season.
During the historic 1972 Summit Series against the Soviet Union, Dennis Hull scored two goals and provided two assists over four games, playing alongside notable New York Rangers players Jean Ratelle and Rod Gilbert. While his brother Bobby Hull was unable to participate due to commitments in the World Hockey Association, Dennis stepped up to represent Canada.
Over his NHL career, Hull amassed 303 goals and 351 assists, totaling 654 points in 959 regular-season games, along with an additional 67 points in 104 playoff appearances. Despite his contributions, the Blackhawks fell short of capturing the Stanley Cup during his tenure.
