Freddy Fermin's Late Heroics Propel Padres to Victory Over Mets

June 6, 2026; San Diego, California, USA; San Diego Padres catcher Freddy Fermin (54) celebrates after hitting a two-run home run during the seventh inning against the New York Mets at Petco Park.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The San Diego Padres (33-30) broke a frustrating six-game losing streak on Saturday evening, edging out the New York Mets (28-36) with a narrow 3-2 win. The standout performance came from catcher Freddy Fermin, who delivered an emotional two-run home run in the seventh inning, marking his first of the season and giving the Padres a crucial lead.

“He works his ass off every day,” said Padres center fielder Jackson Merrill, reflecting on Fermin's dedication. “So for him to get that moment means a lot. Hopefully that's the exorcism for all of us.” With this victory, the team aims to reignite their season after struggling with only one win in their last eleven games.

Padres manager Craig Stammen emphasized the need to move forward, stating, “Those games are all in the past. We've got to put up a brick wall almost every day and say today is the only day that we can do anything about it.” Starter Griffin Canning contributed significantly, allowing just one run and striking out six over five innings.

The scoring began in the second inning when the Mets took an early lead with an RBI single from Brett Baty. The Padres responded in the third, with Sung-mun Song scoring from third after a well-placed hit from Fernando Tatis Jr. The game saw its share of peculiar moments, including a miscommunication that nearly cost the Padres a run in the fifth inning.

After the Mets reclaimed the lead in the seventh, Fermin's pivotal home run sent the crowd at Petco Park into a frenzy. Entering the game with a .126 batting average, Fermin expressed relief, stating, “I’ve never been a part of a slump as long as that has ever been, but everything like that has to come to an end eventually.” As the game progressed, the Padres' defense shone, with Song executing a crucial double play to help secure the win.

With their hopes reignited, the Padres now look to build on this victory as they continue their season.
