Denny Hamlin Continues to Make Waves at Pocono with Historic Win
LONG POND — Denny Hamlin recalled his rookie experience at Pocono Raceway two decades ago, admitting he was unfamiliar with the track's nuances. During his inaugural practice session, he chose to shadow seasoned driver Mark Martin. "I thought he was the right guy to follow," Hamlin reflected. "I followed him for five laps. Passed him on Lap Six. I think I got this place figured out. From then on we’ve won a lot of races. I’ve just approached the place the same way every time. It’s worked."
And "worked" is an understatement. Remarkably, while Martin never secured a victory in 54 attempts at Pocono, finishing as runner-up seven times, Hamlin has now claimed a record eight wins at the iconic 2.5-mile track. His latest triumph came during The Great American Getaway 400 Presented by VISITPA, where he overtook Christopher Bell—who was attempting to stretch his fuel mileage—with just five laps left, finishing 1.678 seconds ahead of Tyler Reddick.
With this victory, Hamlin not only marked his fourth win of the season but also achieved his third consecutive win, following victories at Nashville and Michigan in his No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. Each race seems to add another chapter to his storied career, as he ties Ryan Newman for ninth on NASCAR's all-time pole list, while his three consecutive wins from pole positions place him among a select group of drivers.
Despite his impressive records and milestones, Hamlin remains focused on winning races rather than dwelling on his place in history. "To me it’s like wins, wins, wins. What is your win percentage?" he stated. Hamlin acknowledges the ups and downs he's faced this season, which included a tough moment during last year's championship race and personal challenges, including a house fire that affected his family.
Motivated by a challenge offered by his co-owner Michael Jordan, Hamlin is determined to push through adversity. "If you’re rooting against me, you’re not doing it the right way," he remarked, highlighting his rising confidence both on and off the track. With his mother recently settling into a new home, Hamlin is now eyeing the championship that has eluded him for so long, mindful that his career window may be closing. Team owner Heather Gibbs emphasized the desire to keep him racing, saying, "He wants to leave on top." As for Hamlin, the quest for that elusive title continues amidst a backdrop of growing success at Pocono.
