Devin Tovey Achieves Long-Awaited Victory at Salt Lake City Amateur
Devin Tovey celebrated a significant milestone as he claimed the Richard C. Kramer Salt Lake City Amateur golf title on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at Bonneville Golf Course. This victory comes two years after he narrowly missed out on the title when Bowen Mauss secured it with a crucial birdie on the 17th hole.
For Tovey, 32, who works as a club-fitter at Impact Golf Center in Draper and is also employed part-time at Bonneville, this win was particularly meaningful. "Oh, man, I can’t even tell you how much this means. It is just the monkey off the back," he expressed after lifting the trophy.
The competition was fierce, with Tovey and Kenny Palmer both finishing the 36-hole event at 6-under 138, leading to a sudden-death playoff. On the first playoff hole, Tovey showcased his skill with a 9-iron from 164 yards, landing within 5 feet of the pin before sinking the eagle putt. Palmer, despite a better drive, found trouble with his approach shot, resulting in a par that fell short against Tovey's performance.
Palmer, who resides in Scottsdale, Arizona, had a strong start in the tournament, including a Saturday score of 64. However, a double-bogey on the 11th hole allowed Tovey and others to catch up. Despite a moment of hope for Tovey, Palmer's struggles on the par-3 17th led to a tie, pushing the event into a playoff for the first time since 2021.
With his PGA teaching professional Terry Myers by his side, Tovey took an aggressive approach during the playoff, emphasizing the importance of playing to win. "You can’t have any regrets,” he stated. With this victory under his belt, Tovey is now looking ahead to the Art City Amateur at Hobble Creek Golf Course, where he hopes to continue his successful journey in golf.
