DeVonta Smith Emerges as the Clear Beneficiary of A.J. Brown Trade

The trade saga surrounding A.J. Brown has concluded, with the Philadelphia Eagles officially sending their talented wide receiver to the New England Patriots on June 1. In return, the Eagles received a first-round pick in 2028 and a fifth-round pick in 2027 from New England. This move, timed strategically to minimize financial repercussions, marks a significant shift for both franchises.

With Brown's departure, the focus now turns to DeVonta Smith, who will assume the role of the Eagles' primary receiving target. As the team gears up for a new offensive strategy under quarterback Jalen Hurts, Smith's previous performances indicate he is ready to take on this challenge. His connection with Hurts, stemming from their time at Alabama, suggests that the upcoming season could be particularly fruitful for him.

Smith has consistently demonstrated his ability to lead a receiving corps. Before Brown joined the team, he set a rookie record for the Eagles with 916 receiving yards and five touchdowns in 2021. Even with Brown's presence, Smith has managed to surpass the 1,000-yard mark in both 2022 and 2023, and he continued his production with 1,008 yards in 2025.

Now, as the Eagles adjust to a new system under offensive coordinator Sean Mannion, Smith's prospects for the upcoming season look promising. The Eagles are expected to adopt more play-action plays and different formations that could enhance Hurts' performance, making it easier for Smith to find openings. At just 27 years old, Smith is poised for a breakout season as he steps into a more prominent role.

If Smith can fulfill the expectations that come with being the top receiver, the Eagles may find that Brown’s absence doesn’t hinder their offensive production.
