Dodgers Gear Up for Tommy Edman's Return as Teoscar Hernández Approaches Rehab

LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers are poised to welcome back a crucial player to their roster this week. Manager Dave Roberts announced that Tommy Edman will be activated from the injured list on Tuesday, although he is not anticipated to start until Wednesday. “The bird has landed,” Roberts quipped before the game on Monday. “He's somewhere floating around.”

Edman's comeback arrives at a pivotal moment for a Dodgers team that has been navigating numerous injuries this season. Roberts noted that Edman’s versatility will enhance both the lineup and defensive options. “I'd say so,” he responded when asked about Edman's ability to move around the field. “It's hard because I don't know when Teo is going to come back. I like giving Max an off day here and there. With second base, we've got Miggy and Freeland.”

Expectations are that Edman will play multiple positions, including second base, third base, and left field, as the Dodgers aim to optimize his adaptability while managing the playing time of their regulars. Roberts confirmed that Edman will be part of the starting lineup on Wednesday, coinciding with Shohei Ohtani’s next scheduled pitching appearance.

While Edman's return is imminent, the team is also keeping an eye on several other injured players. Right-handed pitcher Edwin Díaz is reportedly making good strides in his recovery and is set to throw a bullpen session this week. “He’s coming along really well,” said Roberts. “He should be throwing a bullpen this week. Don’t know the time of return.” Although the team hopes for his return after the All-Star break, optimism is growing regarding his rehabilitation.

In contrast, Tyler Glasnow’s situation remains less favorable. Roberts indicated that the veteran right-hander is still not throwing and has not made significant headway with his ongoing back issue, leaving his return timeline uncertain as the team continues to proceed cautiously.

Another development involves Teoscar Hernández, who is also nearing a return. Roberts mentioned that Hernández is entering a “big week” of baseball activities, ramping up his workload. If all goes well, he could start a minor-league rehab assignment as early as this weekend, potentially providing a much-needed boost to a lineup that has been without one of its key offensive contributors for much of June.

As the Dodgers prepare for Edman's return on Wednesday, along with Ohtani taking the mound, the team looks to strengthen its lineup as they push through the summer months.
