Dodgers Win Electric Battle vs. Padres to Even Series
The Los Angeles Dodgers faced the San Diego Padres on Tuesday, May 19, hoping to even the series, and came away with an exciting 5-4 win.
The Padres took the lead in the National League West on Monday, taking a 0.5-game advantage with 48 games in the book for the Dodgers.
After two aces faced off on Monday, the Dodgers and Padres rolled out Emmet Sheehan and Griffin Canning, respectively.
With much more offense and high intensity throughout, the second game of the three-part series lived up to the billing of the rivalry.
The Dodgers got some slugging against the Padres after being blanked by San Diego the day before. Ohtani hit two doubles, and Freddie Freeman delivered two home runs to power the offense.
Sheehan had a poor night by his recent standards, with five hits and a walk leading to four earned runs. They came on two two-run shots from the Padres.
The Dodgers were forced to pull Sheehan after four innings, figuring he lacked sharpness and pitched on short rest.
The bullpen came in and blanked the Padres, allowing no hits and just three walks.
How did the Dodgers win the game?
Despite a good bullpen outing and strong performances from their stars, the Dodgers were still in a close game.
It was tied in the closing innings despite getting Shohei Ohtani with a lead-off double in the top of the eighth inning.
However, even with Mason Miller across the mound, the Dodgers got a clutch run in the top of the ninth after Max Muncy worked a good walk, Dave Roberts put in Alex Call, who threw a wild throw from Miller to first and moved to third base.
With one out, Andy Pages stepped up and had a great nine-pitch at-bat against the most dominant reliever in baseball, eventually getting the sacrifice fly.
Will Klein got his first career save in easy fashion and got the Dodgers back on the winning track.
Los Angeles will be a good spot to take the series when Shohei Ohtani takes the mound on Wednesday.
