Dustin Johnson Shines Briefly at U.S. Open Before Facing Setbacks

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — In a stunning display of skill during the early rounds of the U.S. Open, Dustin Johnson showcased flashes of his former self, reminiscent of the player who clinched the title a decade ago. For a brief period on Thursday, just before dusk, Johnson strung together four consecutive birdies, positioning himself at the top of the leaderboard.

However, his momentum quickly faltered as he encountered difficulties on the par-5 fifth hole and suffered a disappointing three-putt for a double-bogey on the sixth. As darkness halted play, Johnson found himself four strokes behind leader Wyndham Clark, tying for second with several others. He will return on Friday to finish the first round, starting with a 3.5-foot putt for birdie on the par-3 seventh.

At 41 years old, Johnson’s performance at this major tournament marks a significant moment, as it’s been three years since he last contended at this level. His exemption from the U.S. Open, granted for his victory at Oakmont in 2016, is set to expire after this year, adding urgency to his performance.

Johnson's past has been a rollercoaster ride, filled with both triumph and disappointment. From leading the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach in 2010 only to falter, to his contractual shift to LIV Golf, his career has been scrutinized. Despite his former prominence, he has struggled in recent majors, with only one top finish since his move to LIV Golf.

During Thursday’s round, Johnson appeared to draw energy from his pairing with Clark, both former champions. After impressive drives of 403 and 330 yards, they were tied at 4-under par leaving the fourth green. However, his fortunes changed on the fifth, where a missed birdie opportunity and subsequent double-bogey left him trailing.
