Dylan Larkin Expands Trade Options, Wings Take Their Time
Detroit— Dylan Larkin, the captain of the Red Wings, has broadened the scope of teams he is willing to join in a potential trade. Last week, Larkin requested a trade and initially provided a limited list of three teams for which he would waive his no-trade clause to expedite the process. However, according to NHL insider Pierre LeBrun, this list has now grown, a development confirmed by an NHL source to The Detroit News. General Manager Steve Yzerman and Larkin's agent, Pat Brisson, are currently working together to find a resolution that will benefit both parties.
LeBrun also mentioned the possibility of involving a third team in the trade negotiations, an option that remains on the table. Among the teams reportedly on Larkin's expanded list are Florida, Minnesota, Dallas, Tampa, Vegas, Utah, Anaheim, and Los Angeles, reflecting a rising interest in the talented forward, who consistently scores around 30 goals each season.
Larkin, who will celebrate his 30th birthday in July, still has five years remaining on an eight-year contract worth $69.6 million, with an average annual salary cap hit of $8.7 million. He has represented Team USA in international competitions, including the Winter Olympics, and has established himself as one of the premier two-way centers in the league. His recent trade request surprised many, especially given his commitment to helping the Wings return to the playoffs after a decade-long absence.
With the Red Wings failing to reach the postseason for the past 10 years, Larkin's frustrations are understandable. The relationship between him and Yzerman has reportedly been strained, adding context to his request. As teams reach out to Yzerman, the question remains about his strategic intentions. He is not obligated to make a deal until he receives an offer that aligns with the team's future goals, leaving the timeline for any trade uncertain.
The NHL Entry Draft, scheduled for June 26-27, often serves as a pivotal moment for trades, and while something may happen soon, it wouldn't be surprising if Yzerman opts to wait for more favorable conditions, possibly extending the situation into training camp or the start of the regular season. This would pose a challenging scenario for Larkin, who could face a difficult atmosphere with fans and teammates alike if he reports to training camp amid uncertainty.
In addition to Larkin's situation, the Red Wings are also reportedly exploring trade possibilities for goaltender Sebastian Cossa. The 23-year-old, a former first-round draft pick, has limited options regarding his position next season and could either secure a spot in the NHL or risk being placed on waivers to return to the minor leagues.
