Edgewood Softball Team's Season Concludes with Disappointing Loss in Regional Final

NEW PALESTINE — The Edgewood softball team, known for its remarkable performance throughout the season, faced an unexpected defeat in the regional final, marking a disheartening end to their campaign. On June 2, the Mustangs, comprised mostly of seniors, struggled in what was arguably their most atypical game of the year, losing 7-1 to the fifth-ranked New Palestine.

Edgewood coach Mick Hammett emphasized the importance of pride despite the setback. “What I told them is keep your head up,” he stated. “We won 27 games, a sectional against two teams that had a pitcher going to Tennessee and another (Cascade) that had been a state champ and had a lot of veteran players.” He highlighted their achievements over the past four years, which included three sectional titles and a conference championship.

The Dragons capitalized on Edgewood's difficulties, scoring runs through a combination of walks, errors, and uncharacteristic plays. Although Edgewood managed only four hits, they had opportunities to score in several innings but failed to convert. The Mustangs faced frustrations with an inconsistent strike zone that led to numerous strikeouts and defensive errors.

Senior player Madi Bland reflected on the disappointing performance, noting, “This was definitely far from our best. Probably one of our worst games all year. Knowing we had just one hit less than them and it was that big of a difference in the score, that just sucks.” Despite the loss, she expressed gratitude for the high school experience, stating, “All four years, we’ve come out and we’ve put up 20-plus win seasons and we’ve played for each other.”

The game began positively for Edgewood when they scored in the first inning, but things quickly unraveled. A series of walks and key hits allowed New Palestine to take control, leading to a frustrating outing for the Mustangs. Coach Hammett acknowledged the challenge, saying, “We didn’t have our best game out there today. And at this point, you need to.”

In the end, the Mustangs concluded their season with a commendable record of 27-5, leaving behind a legacy of teamwork and resilience that will be remembered fondly by players and fans alike.
