Elfyn Evans Secures Victory in Japan, Expanding WRC Championship Lead

Elfyn Evans celebrated a remarkable triumph at Rally Japan, marking not only his second victory of the season but also his 50th podium finish in the World Rally Championship (WRC). The Welsh driver’s success further solidified his position at the top of the championship standings, increasing his lead over Toyota teammate Takamoto Katsuta from 12 points to 20.

The 37-year-old Evans took control early in the race, showcasing his skills during the iconic stage-two run through Isegami's Tunnel on Friday. He maintained a commanding presence over the subsequent 18 stages, ultimately finishing 12.8 seconds ahead of nine-time world champion Sébastien Ogier, with Sami Pajari trailing by 51.4 seconds in third place. Katsuta, alongside Irish co-driver Aaron Johnston, rounded out a clean sweep for Toyota, finishing fourth.

"What a great weekend, amazing car again on tarmac," Evans remarked, downplaying the importance of his increasing championship lead. "Not sure, a long way to go and too early to talk about that. We have to just enjoy this one."

Jon Armstrong contributed to his championship points by finishing eighth, while his Motorsport Ireland and M-Sport Ford teammate Josh McErlean secured tenth place, adding one point to his tally. Evans' strong performance was further highlighted by his ability to capitalize on being the first driver on the road, winning stage two by a significant margin of 7.5 seconds and leading by 15.7 seconds at the end of the first day.

Although fellow driver Oliver Solberg showed promise with two stage wins on Saturday morning, he crashed out during stage 12, prompting a critique from veteran Ogier regarding the risk he was taking. Despite this setback, Solberg returned to earn maximum bonus points on Sunday and remains in third place in the championship, albeit 49 points behind Evans.

Looking ahead, Evans is aware of the challenges that lie in the upcoming gravel rallies, expressing concern about past difficulties in those events. The next leg of the 14-race series will take competitors to Greece for the Acropolis Rally, set to take place from June 25 to 28.
