England Levels Series with 26-Run Victory Over India, Highlighted by Freya Kemp's Performance
Freya Kemp emerged as a standout performer as England secured a 26-run victory against India in the second Women's T20 International held in Bristol on Saturday, bringing the series to a 1-1 tie. Kemp contributed significantly with both bat and ball, scoring an impressive 39 runs off just 13 deliveries and taking two wickets for 15 runs, dismissing key players Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues. India concluded their innings at 142/9 while chasing a target of 169 runs.
The decisive third and final T20I will take place in Taunton on Tuesday. During England's innings, India initially maintained control, particularly through the middle overs. Left-arm spinner Shree Charani marked her international debut with a notable performance, claiming three wickets for 25 runs. However, the tide shifted dramatically towards the end of England's innings, where they scored 39 runs in the last two overs, including a staggering 24 runs in the final over bowled by Arundhati Reddy.
Kemp’s explosive batting featured two sixes and two fours, propelling England to a total of 168/5. In response, India started their chase strongly with openers Shafali Verma and Mandhana making solid contributions, scoring 22 and 32 runs, respectively. Even after the loss of their openers, India seemed well-placed at 78/2 after ten overs.
The match took a decisive turn during the middle overs as England's spinners, Charlie Dean and Sophie Ecclestone, effectively stifled the scoring. Boundaries became scarce, and the required run rate began to escalate. Despite Yastika Bhatia’s 33 runs off 36 balls, her slow pace eventually led to her retirement, as India sought to accelerate their scoring. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur attempted to revive the innings with 28 runs, marking her entry into an elite group of batters who have scored over 4,000 runs in Women's T20Is.
However, England maintained their momentum, with Kemp taking a critical wicket and Dean following up by dismissing both Richa Ghosh and Harmanpreet within a short span. This flurry of wickets left India scrambling, ultimately sealing a crucial win for England and setting the stage for a thrilling series finale.
