Bloomington North Claims First IHSAA Boys Track Championship

INDIANAPOLIS — The excitement was palpable as the Bloomington North Cougars celebrated a historic moment, securing their first IHSAA boys track championship. The victory was a rollercoaster of emotions, especially during the final moments of the 4x400 relay, where James Bosco pushed himself to the limit.

Caleb Winders initially showcased his strength in the 4x800 and 800 events, helping North clinch titles in both. Unfortunately, during the 4x400 relay, Winders’ hamstring faltered, jeopardizing the team's chance to score points. As Franklin Central, trailing by nine points, took the lead, tension mounted. Winders watched helplessly, exclaiming, “No, no, no, no,” as the potential championship slipped away. However, Franklin Central faltered in the final stretch, allowing the Cougars to secure the championship with a fourth-place finish in the relay.

This triumph marks the first boys track title for Bloomington since 1904, when Bloomington High School captured the inaugural championship on the grounds of Indiana University. The victory also signifies a fitting farewell for Charlie Warthan, the retiring 46-year head coach, who previously led the cross country team to a state title last year. “It’s super amazing,” Warthan reflected. “You don’t win a state championship with just distance runners.”

Winders expressed pride in the team's perseverance, stating, “We worked so hard this year and I’m super proud of the team. Everyone did their role and we got it done.” Despite facing two lengthy weather delays, the Cougars remained resilient, showcasing their determination throughout the meet.

North's 4x800 team, consisting of Shep Jackson, Jake Gentry, and Caelan D’Onofrio, provided a stellar performance, allowing Winders to finish strong and secure a victory with a time of 7:38.87. Winders also excelled in the 800, clocking in at 1:49.36, just shy of the state record. “It feels great,” D’Onofrio said, expressing relief and excitement after the intense competition.

Senior Adis Hamidovic also made an impact, finishing third in the discus with a throw of 185 feet, a significant achievement after struggling with fouls in the previous year. He expressed gratitude for his performance, highlighting the team’s collective effort. As the Cougars bask in their historic victory, they leave a mark in Indiana track history, proving their mettle and dedication.
