Erling Haaland Eyes World Cup Glory with Norway
Erling Haaland is set to make history for Norway as he leads the national team into the 2026 World Cup, a tournament he has never witnessed in person. Born in 2001, Haaland missed Norway's last World Cup appearance in 1998, when they reached the Round of 16 after defeating Brazil. Now, as the star striker for Manchester City, he carries the weight of high expectations as his country aims for a successful run in Group I.
Known for his remarkable goal-scoring prowess, Haaland has netted an impressive 174 goals in just 199 matches across Europe’s top five leagues since the 2019-20 season, averaging 0.87 goals per game. His scoring abilities have not only propelled him to the forefront of club football but have also raised hopes for Norway's first World Cup participation in nearly three decades.
Haaland has embraced the pressure that comes with these expectations. In an interview with GQ, he stated, "Ever since I made my [international] debut in 2019, my big goal has been to get Norway to a World Cup and Euros. It's a lot of pressure on me but I like the pressure — I would put a lot of pressure on Erling Haaland if I wasn't Erling Haaland myself."
Norway has qualified for the World Cup only three times, with Haaland’s father, Alfie, being part of the 1994 squad that did not advance past the group stage. As the team prepares for their initial match against Iraq at Gillette Stadium, followed by clashes with Senegal and France, Haaland's leadership and scoring ability will be pivotal.
Throughout his career, Haaland has consistently demonstrated his goal-scoring talent, evolving from his early days at Bryne to stints at clubs like Borussia Dortmund and now Manchester City. Jan Åge Fjørtoft, a former Norwegian striker, noted Haaland’s development into a well-rounded player, stating, "He’s been in constant development," highlighting his adaptability and leadership qualities.
Norway's journey to the World Cup was seamless, finishing with an 8-0 record in qualifiers, including two victories over Italy. With Haaland scoring in every match and finishing with a UEFA-best 16 goals, Norway's hopes hinge on their star striker. As they navigate a challenging group, Fjørtoft emphasized the need for a strong offensive effort while maintaining defensive discipline to secure advancement to the knockout stages.
