Evan Engram's Role with Broncos Remains Uncertain Despite Offseason Hopes
Following a successful 14-3 season, the Denver Broncos are facing scrutiny regarding the performance of free-agent tight end Evan Engram. Initially viewed as a key addition to the roster, Engram was expected to be a versatile asset in head coach Sean Payton's offense, but his impact fell short during the previous season. With only one touchdown and a tendency to fade from games, his contributions were minimal.
This offseason, optimism surrounding Engram has been rekindled, particularly during the team's organized team activities (OTAs). However, analyst Moe Moton from Bleacher Report remains skeptical about Engram's potential role in the upcoming season. Moton highlights the arrival of new wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, acquired in a trade that involved multiple draft picks, suggesting that Waddle’s presence could dominate the passing game.
Engram, who will celebrate his 32nd birthday in September, played in all 16 games last season but only participated in 42 percent of the offensive snaps, marking a career low. The Broncos also secured tight ends Adam Trautman and Nate Adkins with extensions, and they drafted rookies Justin Joly and Dallen Bentley, adding further competition for Engram.
While Engram is recognized as the most effective pass-catcher among the tight ends, Moton argues that his playing time could diminish due to the emergence of younger players. Trautman may provide valuable experience but is not expected to be a game-changer, and Bentley could struggle to secure a roster spot this year. Though Joly may see opportunities as a rookie, Engram’s role remains precarious.
Despite the challenges, there is hope that Waddle's dynamic skill set could enhance the overall passing game, potentially benefiting Engram's production. As the Broncos prepare for the season ahead, Engram's ability to adjust and thrive in a more competitive environment will be crucial to his success.
