Federal Judge Dismisses Last-Minute Bid to Halt UFC Freedom 250 Event
The highly anticipated UFC Freedom 250 event at the White House is set to proceed as planned this weekend. Earlier this week, concerns arose when the Virginia-based Public Integrity Project filed a last-minute injunction seeking to cancel the event, claiming it violated environmental review regulations under the National Park Service.
The lawsuit, which targeted both the National Park Service and the Department of the Interior, argued that the UFC’s event was unlawful due to improper permitting. It also suggested that President Donald Trump and UFC CEO Dana White stood to benefit financially from hosting the fight on the South Lawn.
However, U.S. District Judge Amit P. Mehta dismissed the injunction on Friday, stating that the plaintiffs lacked the legal standing to challenge the event. This ruling clears the way for UFC's major event scheduled for Sunday night, despite the political controversy surrounding it.
This decision comes as a relief for UFC, which reportedly invested over $60 million in staging the event, including $1 million spent on re-sodding the South Lawn grass. As Judge Mehta noted, “The potential loss of those dollars resulting from a last-minute, court-ordered stoppage cannot be ignored.”
The upcoming UFC event has generated significant attention and debate, making it a notable moment in the intersection of sports and politics.
