Fenwick Claims Regional Baseball Title with Dramatic Walk-Off Victory
Doc Wieland, the head baseball coach at Bishop Fenwick High School, recognized the potential of his team when he took the helm, and his foresight proved accurate. The Falcons secured a spot in the Ohio High School Athletic Association state tournament following a nail-biting walk-off win against Roger Bacon in the regional finals. Fenwick triumphed 5-4 in the Division IV, Region 16 championship, held at Day Air Ballpark, home to the Dayton Dragons. This marks the school's first regional championship since 1982.
The Falcons will face either Richmond Edison or Lancaster Fairfield Union in the state semifinals on June 13 in Akron, starting at 1 p.m. Fenwick rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring two runs to clinch the victory. Senior Boyd Westerfield's ground ball to shortstop allowed junior Isaac Barker to score the decisive run, beating the throw home.
Westerfield expressed confidence in his team, recalling their recent comeback against Urbana in the district final. “We did it before,” he said. “We know we got more, and that's exactly what we did there.” After struggling at the plate recently, he was relieved to contribute significantly to the win. His teammates had set the stage by reaching base earlier in the inning, with Hudson Kreke being hit by a pitch, and Carter Shouse hitting a single.
Ty Miller, who came in as a relief pitcher in the second inning, earned the win for Fenwick. He stepped in after starter Carter Shouse, who faced issues with forearm tightness, left the game. Wieland praised Miller for his readiness and resilience, highlighting his ability to perform under pressure. “To his credit, he came in right from right field and has been huge for us,” Wieland said.
Fenwick initially took a 3-0 lead before Roger Bacon surged ahead with four runs in the fifth inning. However, the Falcons' determination shone through as they fought back, showcasing their depth and talent. As the team heads to the state tournament, the players and coaches are filled with excitement and pride for their accomplishments this season.
