Ferris Basketball Teams Celebrate Historic Back-to-Back Undefeated Seasons

June 16—In a remarkable achievement for high school basketball, the Ferris High School teams led by coach Don Van Lierop completed consecutive undefeated seasons, finishing with perfect 29-0 records and capturing state championships in both 2007 and 2008. These outstanding teams are set to be honored during the Hooptown Hall of Fame ceremony on June 24, 2026.

During this impressive two-year run, the Saxons faced fierce competition, notably from Shadle Park, which nearly derailed their 2007-08 season during the Eastern Regional championship. The Highlanders held a nine-point lead before Ferris made a stunning comeback to win the game in overtime. Following that nail-biter, the Saxons dominated their opponents in the state tournament, winning by an average margin of 20 points. Retired Shadle Park coach Tim Gaebe remarked, “To go undefeated in back-to-back seasons, that’s an amazing feat.”

The success of the Saxons was fueled by a talented roster, including standout players Shawn Stockton, Jared Karstetter, DeAngelo Casto, Erick Cheadle, and Jeff Minnerly, all of whom played pivotal roles during their junior and senior years. Each player brought unique skills to the team, with Casto later going on to play professionally after a stint at Washington State University.

Van Lierop recalls a pivotal preseason meeting where players set ambitious goals, including an undefeated season and a state title. “I told them that as soon as you lose a game, one of your goals is gone,” Van Lierop reflected. This mindset not only propelled the team through the season but also fostered a sense of camaraderie that persists among the players today.

Throughout their championship runs, the Saxons demonstrated exceptional teamwork and versatility, with numerous players taking turns leading in scoring. Their defensive strategy involved using a matchup zone to counter opposing offenses, effectively utilizing Casto’s shot-blocking prowess. Today, many of the former teammates remain close, with regular check-ins and shared memories, showcasing the lasting bonds formed during their historic journey.
