FIFA Adjusts Press Conference Language Policy After Viral Moments Involving Vinicius Jr and Achraf Hakimi

FIFA has swiftly revised its rules regarding language translation at press conferences, following notable incidents involving Achraf Hakimi and Vinicius Jr that gained traction online. This change comes just a day after a clip went viral, showcasing tension during a media interaction before Morocco's match against Brazil, which ended in a 1-1 draw at New Jersey Stadium.

In the now-famous clip, a FIFA official interrupted a Mexican journalist from TV Azteca, preventing him from asking Hakimi a question in Spanish. Despite the official's insistence that translation resources would not allow for it, Hakimi, who is fluent in Spanish, encouraged the journalist to proceed in his native language. “It's OK, I understand,” he said, later asking, “How should I reply, in English or Spanish?” Ultimately, he answered the official's request in English.

This incident wasn't isolated, as Vinicius Jr also faced a similar language barrier when a Venezuelan journalist sought a response from him in Spanish. “I'm with Brazil, I'm gonna speak in Portuguese,” he stated, indicating the ongoing confusion regarding language preferences during media events.

Previously, FIFA's policy provided for English translations alongside the languages of the two competing teams, which in this case included Arabic and Portuguese. Following these recent exchanges, FIFA has confirmed that Spanish will now be included as a fourth language option in press conferences, aiming to enhance communication and inclusivity for all journalists involved.
