Folarin Balogun Makes USMNT History with Historic Brace Against Paraguay
Folarin Balogun made waves on the soccer field by scoring two goals for the United States in their recent match against Paraguay, achieving a remarkable milestone that no USMNT player has reached since 1930. The striker's performance was pivotal in the team's 4-1 victory at SoFi Stadium, marking an impressive start to their World Cup campaign on home soil under coach Mauricio Pochettino.
As highlighted by ESPN Insights, Balogun became the first U.S. player to net multiple goals in a World Cup match in nearly a century. The last player to achieve this feat was Bert Patenaude, who scored three goals against Paraguay during the very first World Cup in Uruguay. Patenaude's hat trick is also recognized as the inaugural hat trick in World Cup history, making Balogun's accomplishment particularly significant.
Throughout the match, Balogun showcased his exceptional ability to finish, with his first goal coming in the 30th minute, demonstrating the sharpness needed in the penalty area. He doubled his tally just before halftime, helping the U.S. establish a commanding 3-0 lead and effectively dismantling Paraguay's defense.
The match got off to a great start for the U.S. when Damián Bobadilla accidentally scored an own goal within the first six minutes. Although Paraguay managed to score in the second half through Maurício, Gio Reyna sealed the victory with a late goal, concluding the match at 4-1. With this win, the United States sits atop Group D with three points and a favorable goal difference, while Paraguay finds themselves under pressure after their opening loss.
The U.S. team will next face Australia on June 19 at Lumen Field in Seattle, where another victory would bring them closer to advancing in the tournament. Meanwhile, Paraguay will look to bounce back against Türkiye on June 20 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.
