From Late-Round Pick to Key Player: Daniel Schneemann Shines for the Guardians

ARLINGTON, Texas — Daniel Schneemann has made a name for himself with the Cleveland Guardians this season, showcasing his defensive skills across five different positions. The 29-year-old, who played for BYU, has maintained an impressive record with only one error in 135 chances as of June 7, highlighting his defensive prowess.

Guardians manager Stephen Vogt recognizes Schneemann's exceptional contributions. “He plays Gold Glove-level defense at four, five positions and gives you a quality at-bat,” Vogt stated. “Daniel Schneemann’s been one of the most valuable players for us... Not many people in the league, if any, can do what he does as far as playing Gold Glove-level defense.” This season alone, Schneemann has taken on roles at second base, shortstop, third base, center field, and right field, even switching positions within games to help the team.

Reflecting on his adaptability, Schneemann said, “That (my versatility) is the way I get into the lineup. I’ve really embraced it and my goal is just to help the team win any way I can.” His journey began as a 33rd-round draft pick in 2018, and he has since become an integral part of the Guardians' success.

During the offseason, Schneemann and his family reside in Provo, where he stays connected with fellow BYU alum Justin Sterner, who plays for the Athletics. “It’s cool just being competitors against each other. Being on the same big-league field is really cool,” he shared. He also expressed excitement over the upcoming NBA draft, particularly for former BYU star AJ Dybantsa, who is projected to be a top pick.

Schneemann credits the Guardians’ positive clubhouse culture for his growth as a player. “I really think it goes a long way in helping us win games when everyone’s pulling for each other,” he noted. As he continues to develop under Vogt and hitting coach Grant Fink, he remains focused on self-improvement, acknowledging, “I always feel like I should be doing better.” With such determination, Schneemann's future with the Guardians looks promising.
