Frondell Finally Dresses For Sweden, Makes Most of Limited Role

After a long and grueling post-draft year for Anton Frondell, which included playing a full pro season in the Swedish Hockey League with Djurgarden, winning a Gold Medal with Sweden at the U20 World Junior Championship, and making his first 12 NHL appearances with the Chicago Blackhawks, he courageously decided there was still more hockey to be played.

Frondell was announced as part of Sweden’s roster for the Fortuna Hockey Games, held from Apr. 30 to May 3 as part of the 2025-26 Euro Hockey Tour, which served almost like a warm-up tournament for the 2026 IIHF World Championship. Among the 25 players named to the Swede’s World Championship squad on May 11, Frondell was one of 13 who also participated in the Fortuna Hockey Games.

While Sweden claimed the Championship at the Fortuna Hockey Games with a 3-0 record, defeating Switzerland 8-1, the Czech Republic 4-2, and Finland 3-2, Frondell had an underwhelming showing individually. After tallying a goal in the opener against the Swiss, the 2025 No. 3 overall pick failed to find the stat sheet in the final two games. It’s worth mentioning that Frondell’s teammate and 2026 top draft prospect, Ivar Stenberg, was the tournament’s leading scorer, recording five points (2G, 3A) in three appearances.

Even though it occurred in a small sample size, Frondell’s disappointing three-game stretch seemingly impacted his usage early on at the World Championship in Switzerland. When Sweden’s opening-game lineup against Canada was announced last Friday, Frondell was curiously one of two forwards who did not dress.

Without much explanation, the newly-turned 19-year-old also didn’t suit up for either of Sweden’s next two contests against Denmark (5/17) and Czechia (5/18), while forwards like Jacob de La Rose and Rasmus Asplund remained in the lineup. The decision to continue scratching Frondell left everyone perplexed, especially when considering the country’s disappointing 1-2 start to the tournament.

Finally, ahead of Sweden’s fourth game at the World Championship against Slovenia on Friday, Frondell was registered by head coach Sam Hallam to make his debut. However, the excitement from Blackhawks and Swedish fans alike didn’t last very long, as Frondell was later listed in the lineup as the team’s 13th forward.

For whatever reason, Hallam has elected to give younger players like Stenberg and Viggo Bjork, another projected first-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, tremendous opportunities on the top line, but refuses to do anything close to the same for Frondell. The situation has to be remarkably frustrating for him, given that he chose to extend his already hectic post-draft season for this opportunity.

No matter, Frondell valiantly pounced on his first chance to draw into the lineup versus Slovenia and maximized his 8:53 of ice time, the third-lowest among all Swedish forwards in the game. He recorded two assists, with one being a primary helper, and added three shots with a plus-two rating in only 12 shifts.

With Sweden already ahead 3-0 in the second period, Frondell shielded off a defender while carrying the puck behind Slovenia’s net. Not only did he maintain possession while drawing a penalty, but he also picked up a secondary assist by working the puck back to the blue line.

Frondell’s second assist occurred on Sweden’s final goal of the game, as he swiftly moved the puck from the goal line to defenseman Mattias Ekholm at the right circle late in the second period. Nothing too fancy, but he properly recognized his teammate was wide open in a dangerous area of the ice.

Following their 6-0 victory against Slovenia, the Swedes have three games remaining in the preliminary round, with matchups against Italy (5/22), Norway (5/23), and Slovakia (5/26) left on the schedule. By making the most of his limited ice time, Frondell certainly proved why he should have been in the lineup in the first place — not to mention that he’s worthy of a larger role moving forward in the tournament.

Whether Hallam sees it the same way is an entirely separate discussion, but Frondell’s performance on Friday will hopefully help get him more opportunities over the final three preliminary games.
