Haarer Shines as Sole Local Golfer Advancing from Regional Competition

WINONA LAKE — Luke Haarer, a junior from Westview, took a moment to reflect on his performance during the IHSAA boys golf regional held at Stonehenge Golf Club before expressing his satisfaction. Haarer recorded 14 pars along with two birdies, offsetting a pair of bogeys to finish with a solid score of 71, comprising an even-par 35 on the front nine and an even-par 36 on the back. After a brief pause, Haarer said, “I played well for today. Looking at some other scores, I guess the course played more difficult than I anticipated. I’m happy with how I played.”

Haarer's score placed him as the second-best performer of the day, just behind Homestead’s Holden Orofino, who clinched the individual title with a score of 68. Since Westview did not qualify as a team, Haarer secured the first individual advancing spot, marking his fourth consecutive state boys golf meet appearance, following his brother Silas, who participated in the 2023 and 2025 competitions. For Luke, this will be his second state appearance; he qualified as a freshman in 2024 but tied for 50th with a cumulative score of 159 (+15). “I’m extremely excited,” Haarer remarked. “I’m just happy that I trusted the process and I want to thank friends, family and my team for just trusting the process.”

Westview's head coach, Jeff Marchant, expressed pride in Haarer’s progress, noting that he has worked hard to improve his game throughout the season. “He’s just really been working on his game and trying to get more consistent,” Marchant stated. With the school year concluded, Haarer has devoted more time to practice on the course.

Westview was one of three local teams competing at the Warsaw regional alongside Fairfield and Northridge, with the latter entering the tournament after leading the previous week’s sectional. The competition was stiff, featuring several ranked teams including No. 2 Homestead and No. 8 Leo. Many coaches anticipated that Homestead and Leo would secure the top spots, leaving the remaining teams to battle for the last qualifying position.

Despite the tough competition, Haarer and his teammates performed admirably, with Haarer leading the Warriors to a score of 315. Other Westview scores included Cooper Schwartz at 78, Brett Springer and Tyler Brewer both at 83, and Liam Brill at 99. Schwartz achieved a career-best score. The regional title ultimately went to the unranked Plymouth team, which scored 302, followed closely by Homestead and Warsaw. Haarer, along with Leo’s Caden Matthias and Western’s Callen Szerdy, will advance as individuals from non-advancing teams. The boys golf state meet is set for June 16-17 at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel, commencing at 8 a.m. both days.
