Hackenberg Leads Marcellus to Historic State Finals Appearance

EAST LANSING — As Marcellus prepared for their Division 4 state semifinal game, head coach Christian Hutson took a moment to soak in the experience at McLane Stadium, located on the Michigan State University campus. The Wildcats had been on an impressive postseason run and advancing to the semifinals was a significant milestone. After their 4-0 victory over Painesdale Jeffers, Hutson expressed his emotions about the day. “I wish every coach could experience this today,” he shared. “Just this atmosphere and being on that field. You never know if it’s going to happen. It’s pretty awesome. I’m all smiles. I don’t know what to say because there’s been some years where it’s been tough for us. It’s paid off.”

Cale Hackenberg was the standout performer for Marcellus, showcasing his pitching prowess with an impressive 15 strikeouts over seven innings. He faced only 26 batters, maintaining a strong defensive presence and preventing Jeffers from mounting any serious threats. Hackenberg had expressed his desire to pitch before the game, hoping to lead Marcellus to its inaugural state finals appearance. "I just trusted my team behind me. I really love playing with these guys, it's so much fun," he remarked post-game. "Winning games is so much fun and we've done a lot of that lately so I'm really glad to be here."

The Wildcats took the lead early, scoring in the first inning when Hackenberg hit a triple, followed by a sacrifice fly from Abram Coffey. Coffey further contributed with a two-run single in the third inning, extending Marcellus' advantage. Despite feeling some initial nerves, Hackenberg settled into the game, noting, "Definitely some butterflies, but once I settled in I was comfortable. It took about an inning or so. I was comfortable on the mound. Being up 3-4 runs, it was awesome."

Marcellus is set to face Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart in the Division 4 state championship game on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. This marks a crucial moment for the Wildcats, as they aim for their first-ever state title in baseball. Hutson acknowledged the tremendous support from their community, stating, "I think our whole town was here today. It's good to see, they brought the energy for us. The support all the way through this tournament has been unreal." In their semifinal victory, Hackenberg contributed two hits, while Coffey also had two hits, including a triple. Jeffers managed only four hits throughout the game.

Sacred Heart secured their place in the finals with a 4-0 win over Royal Oak Shrine Catholic earlier in the day. "We're gonna go out there and we're gonna battle. That's what my team is always gonna do, we're gonna play the game the right way and we're gonna battle," Hutson added.
