Lakers Face Potential Departures as Key Players Eye Free Agency
The Los Angeles Lakers may soon see three significant players opt out of their contracts for the 2026-27 NBA season. Austin Reaves, Marcus Smart, and Deandre Ayton are all anticipated to decline their player options, according to recent predictions.
In a recent analysis published by John Hollinger in The Athletic, it was suggested that Reaves, Smart, and Ayton are likely to pursue new contracts in free agency, whether that be with the Lakers or another team. Hollinger noted that Ayton, who signed a deal with the Lakers that has proven to be below market value, could command a significant salary after showcasing his abilities, with a BORD$ value of $19.3 million, making him one of the most sought-after starting centers available.
Smart's situation is similarly promising. He signed a contract that included a player option, anticipating a lucrative summer if he performed well, which he did. With a current BORD$ value of $11.6 million, he appears ready to explore his options in the market.
Meanwhile, Reaves' future is set to be a major focus this offseason. Several teams, including the Brooklyn Nets, Detroit Pistons, and Atlanta Hawks, have expressed interest in him. However, the Lakers have made it clear they wish to retain him. General Manager Rob Pelinka emphasized, "He started his journey here as a Laker and has made it very clear to us that he wants his journey to continue as a Laker. And we feel the same way."
While the players' decisions remain to be seen, it is evident that keeping Reaves is a priority for the Lakers, as they prepare for a significant offseason.
