Tom Izzo Shows Interest in 4-Star Recruit Mateen Cleaves Jr.

Mateen Cleaves, a legendary figure during Tom Izzo's tenure at Michigan State, guided the Spartans to their national championship victory in 2000. Fast forward to today, and the focus has shifted to his son, Mateen Cleaves Jr., as he embarks on his journey to college basketball.

The younger Cleaves, hailing from Orchard Lake, Michigan, is currently honing his skills at Dream City Christian in Arizona. Standing at 6 feet 4 inches, he is recognized as a 4-star recruit and ranks as the 41st overall player in the 2028 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

Recently, Izzo was spotted observing Cleaves Jr. during a camp, as reported by Joe Tipton from On3. Though the Spartans have yet to extend an official offer, they are considered a strong contender in the recruitment process. At present, the only offer on the table for Cleaves Jr. comes from Rutgers.

As the landscape of college athletics shifts with the NIL era, recruiting has become increasingly competitive. Izzo's interest in the Spartan legacy player certainly adds excitement to the recruitment process for Cleaves Jr.
