Harry Enten Links Trump's Presence to Knicks' Loss, Evokes 2006 Mets Heartbreak
CNN data analyst Harry Enten has drawn an intriguing parallel between President Donald Trump's presence at a recent NBA Finals game and a painful memory for New York sports fans dating back to 2006. During Game 3 between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden, Trump was in attendance, but his presence did not bring the luck many had hoped for.
The Knicks entered the game on an impressive 13-game winning streak, having not suffered a defeat in 46 days. However, the evening took a disappointing turn as the Knicks fell to the Spurs with a score of 115-111, marking their first loss since April 23. The atmosphere shifted notably when Trump was displayed on the Jumbotron during the national anthem, prompting “thunderous” boos from the crowd, according to a White House press pool report.
On CNN's "The Source," host Alyssa Farah Griffin, who previously served as White House Communications Director, expressed that she would have advised Trump against attending the game. “If he loses tonight, everyone is going to blame him,” she cautioned, suggesting that fans would associate the loss with his presence.
Enten, a lifelong New Yorker and Mets supporter, took the opportunity to reference a notorious moment in Mets history. “During my lifetime, the best chance the Mets ever had to win a World Series was in 2006,” he reminisced, recalling the pivotal Game 7 of the National League Championship Series where Carlos Beltran struck out looking. Notably, Trump was present in the background of that infamous moment, wearing an outfit similar to what he donned at the Knicks game. “If they don’t win,” Enten stated, “the New York Knickerbocker fans are gonna hold it against them forever.”
In that 2006 playoff, the Mets ultimately lost to the St. Louis Cardinals, who went on to secure the World Series title.
