Houston Texans Linebacker E.J. Speed Out for 2026 Season Due to Injury

The Houston Texans are grappling with a significant setback as linebacker E.J. Speed has been diagnosed with a fully torn quadriceps tendon, leading to his expected absence for the entire 2026 regular season. This diagnosis marks a considerable increase in severity from the initial report of a partial tear. While Speed has undergone successful surgery, his return before the postseason appears highly unlikely.

The injury occurred in an unfortunate manner, not during a game or training camp, but rather during a standard offseason workout. While performing a one-legged split squat, Speed suffered a freak accident that has now altered his season. This unfortunate timing is particularly painful given that he had just signed a two-year contract worth up to $13 million, reaffirming his commitment to the Texans rather than testing free agency.

Speed's contributions to the team extended beyond flashy statistics. Last season, he participated in 16 games, starting in nine, and accumulating 65 tackles while also playing a vital role on special teams, where he was on the field for over half of the snaps. His absence will likely be felt as the season progresses, especially as the depth chart begins to thin.

In the wake of Speed's injury, the Texans will rely on Azeez Al-Shaair and Henry To'oTo'o as their primary linebackers. Al-Shaair, who earned Pro Bowl honors last season, is expected to step up, but Speed's versatility and experience are irreplaceable. Additionally, rookie Wade Woodaz will find himself thrust into a more significant role than anticipated, while depth players like Jake Hansen, Marte Mapu, and Jake Hummel will also be called upon, albeit without the proven experience that Speed brought to the team.

This injury comes at a time when the Texans had high hopes for the upcoming season, aiming to compete vigorously. Losing a dependable and versatile linebacker before even beginning OTAs is not the start the team envisioned for the summer.
