Hyder Amil Reveals Health Struggles That Impacted Recent Fights
LAS VEGAS – Hyder Amil has faced significant challenges over the past few months, beyond simply suffering losses in his last two fights. The fighter, who holds a record of 11-2 in MMA and 3-2 in the UFC, saw his undefeated streak come to an end last June when he was defeated by Jose Delgado at UFC 317. Following that, he lost a unanimous decision to Jamall Emmers. Now, Amil has identified a critical health issue that may have contributed to these setbacks.
During a media day, Amil shared insights with MMA Junkie and other reporters, stating, “I lost my last fight, but I won something bigger.” He explained that he experienced severe stomach problems during his fights, which ultimately led to the discovery of an ulcer. “I was puking, fighting stomach symptoms during the fight,” he recounted, revealing that a doctor later found an infection that could have resulted in stomach cancer if left untreated. “I didn't know what was going on with me,” he added.
Amil is now on the mend and is gearing up for a match against Christian Rodriguez at UFC Fight Night 279 this Saturday. Rodriguez, who holds a record of 12-4 in MMA and 5-4 in the UFC, is also coming off two consecutive losses but did not face any serious health issues. Amil said, “I’m off the medications,” explaining that his performance was hampered by an infection he contracted while in Mexico. “I was stressed. I was like eight pounds light on both my last fights.”
After starting his UFC career in 2023 with a victory on Dana White's Contender Series, Amil enjoyed early success, winning his first two bouts before his recent challenges began. Reflecting on the difficulties he faced, including personal losses and health struggles, he said, “I've been racing with a broken car for eight months.” Now, he feels rejuvenated and has made significant changes in his life, stating, “I cleaned up my life, made it organized, got the infection gone, and I'm looking at this fight as, ‘Did Hyder Amil learn his lessons from last year?’”
