Infantino's Remark on Italy's World Cup Absence Raises Eyebrows
Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, has once again sparked debate with his recent comments regarding the World Cup and the number of participating teams. In a discussion about the potential expansion of the tournament, he made a pointed reference to Italy's failure to qualify for the event.
"For now, we are enjoying this first historic World Cup with 48 teams. Maybe Italy would qualify with 64 teams. I could expand it to 228 and see if they qualify," Infantino remarked in an interview with CazeTV prior to the tournament's kickoff in Mexico.
His playful jab at the Italian national team was met with backlash in Italy, where many perceived it as disrespectful. The Italian team has faced a tough road, enduring its third consecutive failure to reach the World Cup, last appearing on football's grandest stage in 2014.
This year's World Cup, featuring 48 teams for the first time, marks a significant change in the tournament's format, aiming to include more nations in the competition.
