Iowa Wrestlers Spencer Lee and Everest Leydecker Secure Spots on Senior World Team
Two grapplers from the Iowa Hawkeyes clinched their places on the United States Senior World team during the Final X competition held on June 19. The format required wrestlers to win a best-of-three series to earn their spots. Spencer Lee, a former Hawkeye standout, successfully secured his position for the second consecutive year, and third overall including the Olympics, at 57 kilograms by defeating Luke Lilledahl of Penn State with a 2-0 match score.
18-year-old Everest Leydecker, an incoming freshman for the Iowa women's wrestling team, also made headlines by securing her first Senior World team berth at 55 kilograms. Leydecker showcased her skills by winning both matches against Areana Villaescusa. Their victories set the stage for them to represent the United States at the Senior World Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan, from October 24 to November 1.
While Lee's journey was triumphant, other notable Hawkeye alumni had mixed results. Stephen Buchanan (97 kilograms) faced off against Kyle Snyder but was unable to secure a team spot, losing in the final bout. Macey Kilty (62 kilograms) also fell short against Adaugo Nwachukwu despite winning one match. Iowa State's two-time NCAA champion David Carr struggled against veteran James Green at 74 kilograms, ultimately losing the series.
Lee’s performance was particularly impressive as he overcame a previous loss to Lilledahl at the US Open earlier this year. He won the first match decisively with a 7-2 score and came from behind in the second match to clinch an 8-4 victory. Leydecker's matches were equally notable; she began her series with a 2-1 victory and followed it up with a 3-1 win, demonstrating maturity beyond her years.
In other matches, true-third bouts were held, granting winners opportunities on the US Senior National team. Iowa women's wrestler Reese Larramendy won by forfeit, securing her place as the highest-placing age-eligible member in her weight class. Meanwhile, Northern Iowa alum Parker Keckeisen also triumphed in his true-third match.
Three additional matches involving Hawkeyes Real Woods, Kylie Welker, and Kennedy Blades are yet to be rescheduled due to medical delays, adding further intrigue to the upcoming wrestling season.
