Garber Advocates for Whitecaps’ Future in Vancouver Amid Las Vegas Interest
Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber emphasized on Friday that the league is committed to keeping the Vancouver Whitecaps in their home city of Vancouver. This assertion comes at a time when Las Vegas is emerging as a potential new market for MLS, with speculation surrounding the Whitecaps' future.
Garber made his remarks prior to the United States’ 2-0 win over Australia in the FIFA World Cup at Lumen Field. He underscored MLS’s desire for a long-term resolution in Vancouver, even as interest in Las Vegas grows. Reports indicate that local businessman Grant Gustavson is heading a group that has formally proposed to acquire the Whitecaps and relocate them to Nevada, including plans for a dedicated soccer stadium.
While Garber did not directly comment on the bid, he acknowledged the allure of Las Vegas as a viable market for the league. "I think we've got a great, passionate, well-heeled owner that has an option on an unbelievably attractive piece of land," he noted, highlighting the potential for a new era in MLS ownership.
Currently, the focus remains on Vancouver, where Garber stated, “We're committed to keeping the team there if we have a viable stadium project, which we don't have now.” He expressed optimism after recent discussions with local leaders and stakeholders about securing the club's future, though he pointed out that the Whitecaps face significant challenges due to their current stadium arrangement at BC Place.
Garber stated that the club's existing setup is unsustainable and requires a more favorable lease arrangement in order to thrive. He pointed to the successful retention of the Columbus Crew in Ohio as a model for what can be achieved through collaboration among political leaders, business executives, and ownership groups.
As MLS navigates the complexities of the Vancouver-Las Vegas situation, Garber remains hopeful about the future of soccer in North America, particularly in light of the ongoing World Cup, which he believes is showcasing the country’s growing passion for the sport.
