Ready to Shine: BYU's Nate Pickens Set to Make His Mark After Injury
Guard Nate Pickens is eager to showcase his skills this season after overcoming a challenging year sidelined by injury. The UC Riverside transfer had high expectations for his debut with BYU, anticipating a significant role in what was expected to be the Cougars' most exciting season to date.
Unfortunately, Pickens' hopes were dashed early last season when he sustained an ankle injury during summer practices. Initially deemed minor, the injury worsened, leading to torn cartilage and ultimately requiring surgery in November, which ended his season prematurely. Watching his teammates struggle on the court without him was difficult, but it motivated him to come back stronger. “It was definitely tough, especially mentally. I knew I wanted to have a really good year,” he reflected. “I took it as a learning experience... it was a blessing in disguise.”
Now fully engaged in summer workouts, the 6-foot-3 guard feels grateful for the opportunity to play at BYU, staying committed to the program despite the challenges he faced. “I just wanted to be here,” Pickens stated, expressing appreciation for the support he received from the fans and coaching staff. During his time at UC Riverside, he averaged 9.8 points and 3.5 rebounds per game, showcasing his potential to make a significant impact.
Pickens aims to enhance his game further by improving his decision-making and rebounding skills. With a focus on defense, he is determined to become a valuable asset for the Cougars, noting, “My mindset was just wanting to stop whoever the best player is.” He admires NBA star Jrue Holiday for his defensive prowess and versatility, aspiring to emulate that winning mentality on the court.
As he prepares for the upcoming season, Pickens is setting personal goals while emphasizing the importance of team success. He hopes to be recognized as one of the Big 12's top bench players and to contribute to a more successful campaign than last year. “I want to be a player who coaches can trust,” he said. “I just want to win as a team.”
