Iranian Football Official Criticizes World Cup Treatment as "Dark Point"
Iran's national football team is currently preparing for the World Cup in Mexico, but a prominent official has labeled their treatment at the tournament as a "dark point" in its history. Hedayat Mombeyni, the secretary general of the Iranian football federation, expressed his concerns during a press conference, following the federation's announcement that they would file a complaint with FIFA regarding travel restrictions affecting the team's performance.
Iran had requested to fly to the United States two days prior to their upcoming match against Belgium in Los Angeles, scheduled for midday on Sunday. In contrast, Belgium's team was permitted to travel to California on Friday. However, the Iranian federation's request to do the same was denied.
In response to these claims, Andrew Giuliani, the executive director of the White House FIFA Task Force, clarified that the Iranian team had been informed they could only enter the United States the day before their matches. "The team will be allowed to come in, match day minus one, so the day before the match," he told CBS News.
According to FIFA's regulations, teams are typically expected to travel to the match venue the day before their games, although exceptions can be made in special circumstances. Mombeyni was critical of the U.S. organizers, suggesting that they should have adhered to the rules more diligently. "People who are not capable of carrying out FIFA's rules should not be hosting, and FIFA should not select them to be hosts," he remarked.
The upcoming World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, marks a historic moment as it is the first time a host nation will be required to accommodate a team from a country it is in conflict with.
