Jake Mangum Shines with Home Run as Pirates Edge Twins 10-9
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Jake Mangum delivered a standout performance, going 3 for 4 with his inaugural home run of the season and a crucial RBI single, helping the Pirates fend off the Minnesota Twins in a thrilling 10-9 victory on Saturday. Mangum's home run came against pitcher Bailey Ober (6-3) in the second inning, marking the fourth long ball of his career.
In a game that saw the Pirates relinquish a substantial six-run advantage, Mangum's single in the fifth inning provided a much-needed boost, scoring Konnor Griffin. His contributions weren't limited to the plate; Mangum also showcased his defensive skills by making a critical play in the ninth inning, robbing Orlando Arcia of potential extra bases with the tying run on first.
Gregory Soto secured the final four outs to notch his seventh save, while Yohan Ramirez (3-2) picked up the win in relief after starting pitcher Mitch Keller struggled to maintain a 7-1 lead. Oneil Cruz added to the offense with his 13th home run of the year, marking his second consecutive game with a homer. Spencer Horwitz also contributed with a leadoff home run in the first inning.
Nick Gonzales recorded three hits for Pittsburgh, which celebrated its fifth win in the last seven games. This match was particularly poignant for former manager Derek Shelton, who faced his second straight defeat in PNC Park since being let go by the Pirates last May, during his sixth season at the helm.
On the other side, Kody Clemens collected three of Minnesota's 12 hits, while Josh Bell drove in three runs. The Twins, however, have struggled recently, suffering five losses in their last six games. Ober's winning streak ended abruptly as he allowed a season-high eight runs (seven earned) on 12 hits, surrendering seven home runs over his past three outings.
In an unusual turn of events, Pirates second baseman Brandon Lowe was ejected for the first time in his nine-year career after flying out in the fourth inning. The two-time All-Star, who leads the team with 14 homers, was tossed by first base umpire Jordan Baker following an unsuccessful challenge of a strike call.
The two teams will conclude their series on Sunday, with Zebby Matthews (1-2, 2.37 ERA) set to start for the Twins against the Pirates' Braxton Ashcraft (4-2, 2.75).
