Jamahal Hill Announces Move to Heavyweight, Targets Josh Hokit for Debut Fight

INGLEWOOD, CALIFORNIA - JANUARY 16: Jamahal Hill made headlines at the UFC 311 press conference held at Intuit Dome. The former UFC Light Heavyweight champion, known as "Sweet Dreams," is making a significant shift in his fighting career by moving up to the Heavyweight division. This change follows a trend of 205-pound fighters seeking new opportunities in the higher weight class.

During a recent episode of his podcast, Hill shared, "I’m gonna go ahead and say it now: I’m going to Heavyweight. That’s the announcement. Breaking news." He explained that he has been preparing for this transition for several months, focusing on gaining the necessary weight and muscle mass. Hill expressed his ambition to become a double champion, stating, "I think double champ is better than two-time champ. I like the way it sounds."

Having fought 17 times at Light Heavyweight, including 11 bouts in the Octagon, Hill's decision to move up was anticipated, especially considering his tendency to bulk up between fights. He has already identified his first target in the new weight class: rising Heavyweight contender Josh Hokit. "As far as Hokit goes, that’s what I want. That’s exactly the fight I want," Hill remarked, acknowledging Hokit's recent success in the division.

Hokit, who has been on a winning streak and is possibly on the brink of a title shot, may be hesitant to take a step back for Hill's debut. However, Hill remains optimistic about the matchup, emphasizing his status as a former champion. He mentioned, "Why not? Former UFC champion, come on. Come get some."

Hill has been inactive since suffering a unanimous decision loss to Khalil Rountree Jr. at UFC Baku last June. He underwent knee surgery late last year, which is expected to keep him sidelined until late 2026. Currently on a three-fight losing streak, Hill's move to Heavyweight could provide a fresh start in his career.

The UFC has seen several fighters, including Johnny Walker and Aleksandar Rakic, make similar transitions, indicating a shifting landscape in the divisions. Fans will be eager to see how Hill fares in his new weight class.
