Tommy Edman Returns to Full Form After Ankle Surgery
LOS ANGELES — Tommy Edman, the versatile infielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers, is thrilled to be back in top shape following his recovery from ankle surgery. Acquired by the Dodgers in July 2024 for his ability to cover multiple positions, Edman underwent the procedure to address a lingering injury he sustained during his time with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Speaking at Dodger Stadium, Edman reflected on the decision to have surgery, stating, “Getting the surgery was a tough decision because I knew I was going to be out for a little bit. But after speaking with the doctor, we determined that it was going to have a high success, a high probability of getting back to 100 percent. So I decided to go through with it. It’s feeling great now.” He noted that while recovery took longer than anticipated, he is finally feeling like himself again.
Throughout the 2025 season, Edman faced setbacks after initially feeling good. He suffered another ankle sprain in May, which sidelined him for two weeks, and endured a second injury in August that kept him out for an additional five weeks. During his recent rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City, Edman worked diligently to regain his confidence on the field. “I was definitely a little tentative the first week, getting back to playing baseball again,” he admitted. “Just getting really comfortable with that was really important these last few weeks.”
Having missed the first 73 games of the season, Edman acknowledges that recovery is not always straightforward. “With surgery, a lot of times it’s not a super linear progression,” he explained. Now, he feels secure enough to play without heavy ankle tape, opting instead for a brace. The Dodgers plan to gradually reintegrate him into the lineup, with manager Dave Roberts indicating he will start in various positions, including second base and third base.
Edman expressed his eagerness to contribute wherever needed, saying, “That’s kind of what I’ve come to expect over the course of my career, is just filling in wherever needed, and playing a bunch of different spots.” He is set to start at third base against the Tampa Bay Rays, showcasing his strong track record against left-handed pitchers, which makes him a valuable asset in the Dodgers' lineup.
