James Harden’s reaction to 4-0 sweep vs. New York Knicks exposes the Cavaliers star’s delusion
James Harden insisted the Cleveland Cavaliers were still better than the New York Knicks, even after a 4-0 Eastern Conference Finals sweep proved otherwise.
That is what makes the reaction so hard to take seriously. Confidence is useful in the playoffs, but denial becomes obvious when the scoreboard keeps giving the same answer.
The New York Knicks did not sneak past the Cleveland Cavaliers through luck or one late mistake. They controlled the series from the first collapse to the final blowout.
James Harden gave the Cleveland Cavaliers an excuse the New York Knicks had already buried
In an SNY Knicks clip, James Harden tried to explain why the Cleveland Cavaliers were swept by the New York Knicks.
“It was 4-0, but I don’t think we had a chance as far as our best shot. They dominated us 4-0, but I don’t know if I can necessarily answer that question because, genuinely I do feel like we’re the better team,” Harden said.
That answer would have sounded more reasonable after a tight seven-game series. It sounds detached after four straight losses by double digits.
Harden can argue the Cavaliers never showed their best version, but that is not the same as being the better team. The Knicks forced Cleveland into bad offense, rushed decisions, and poor defensive recovery.
There is a difference between believing a roster had more to give and pretending the result did not reveal anything. Harden blurred that line completely.
The New York Knicks made James Harden’s Cleveland Cavaliers claim look worse every game
The sweep was not cosmetic. The New York Knicks won 115-104 in overtime, 109-93, 121-108, and then closed the series with a 130-93 humiliation in Game 4.
That final margin removed any serious argument about the gap between the teams. Cleveland briefly led 17-14 before New York answered with a 20-0 run and never let the game feel competitive again.
The Knicks also owned the wider shape of the series. They averaged 118.8 points, 46.0 rebounds and 28.0 assists, while the Cavaliers averaged 99.5 points, 36.8 rebounds and 20.3 assists.
Jalen Brunson gave New York the control Harden claimed Cleveland never had. He was named Eastern Conference Finals MVP after averaging 25.5 points and 7.8 assists across the sweep.
The Cavaliers had injuries, fatigue, and chemistry questions, especially after Harden’s late-season arrival. Those are explanations, not proof that Cleveland was better.
Better teams do not lose four straight, get outscored by 77 points, and call it a missed opportunity. They adjust, respond, and make the opponent uncomfortable.
