Jaycie Nichols Celebrates NCAA Championship with Texas Softball: A Caddo Alum's Dream Realized

While the Nichols family has long been fans of the Oklahoma Sooners, their daughter Jaycie has charted her own path in the world of softball. Hailing from Durant, located 150 miles south of Oklahoma City, Jaycie excelled at Caddo High School, where she claimed four fastpitch softball state championships, three in slowpitch, and even competed in basketball and track. However, her college choice took a turn when she opted for the University of Texas, donning burnt orange instead of crimson and cream.

This past Thursday, Jaycie played a pivotal role in leading the Texas Longhorns to a 4-1 victory over Texas Tech, securing their second consecutive NCAA title in the Women's College World Series. Despite the lack of Longhorn fans in Durant, Jaycie found a strong bond with head coach Mike White and her teammates.

"Coach White is very knowledgeable," Jaycie remarked after their championship win. "They really welcomed me on, and the team was amazing. Austin really did feel like home, and I'm so glad I chose to go there."

Her family was wholly supportive of her decision. Jaycie's older sister, Jordyn, is a sophomore at Murray State College, while her younger sister, Joslyn, also plays softball. Their father, Cody, emphasized the importance of family unity and the memories they've created through softball. "We live and breathe (softball) from a young age," he said. "It doesn't matter what they do as long as we can all be together — that was the goal."

Overcome with emotion after the win, Jaycie shed tears as her parents embraced her on the field. In her first appearance at the WCWS, she scored four runs, including two in Texas’s Game 1 victory against Texas Tech. "I couldn't ask for a better feeling," she shared. "Coming home, doing what I've been dreaming of since I was a little kid, it's a dream come true."

Cody found it difficult to put the moment into words, reflecting on the culmination of years of hard work. "This is the ultimate goal," he said. "Things they dream about at a young age, you never really think it could come true; it's surreal."

With their dedication, the Nichols family often splits their time between Jaycie's games in Austin and Jordyn's matches in Tishomingo, making the four-and-a-half to five-hour drive frequently. "We're never ones to hold her back," Cody added. "We promoted it, just go on as high as you wanna go, and we're all in." Now, with a national championship under her belt, Jaycie reflects on the journey with gratitude. "We're all super grateful," she said.
