Jonesville Baseball Triumphs in Nail-Biter, Advances to Regional Championship

CENTREVILLE — Jonesville's baseball team showcased resilience in a nail-biting match that saw them emerge victorious after a dramatic battle. Senior pitcher Marshall Baker set a strong foundation for the Comets, who initially built a comfortable five-run lead, looking set to secure their place in the Division 3 regional championship. However, a fierce comeback from Centreville in the final inning turned the tide, putting Jonesville's season in jeopardy.

In a stunning seventh inning, Centreville scored six runs, overturning a 7-2 deficit and pushing ahead with an 8-7 lead. Rather than succumbing to the pressure, the Comets rallied back. Carson Young delivered a decisive walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth, clinching a thrilling 9-8 win during the Division 3, Region 44 semifinal held on June 3 at Centreville High School. This victory propels Jonesville into the regional championship game against Detroit Edison, scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 6, at Plymouth Christian.

“As a senior, I feel like a parent for the group,” Baker remarked. “I want everyone to do good… and I just want everyone to have a good time.” Baker's influence was palpable throughout the match as he threw four innings, allowing just three hits and two runs—one earned—while striking out three batters and issuing one walk. The Comets found their rhythm offensively, with a standout performance highlighted by Young's two-run single that sparked a five-run fourth inning, giving them a 7-2 edge.

Despite the setbacks, Jonesville's determination shone through. After Centreville's late-game surge, Baker played a crucial role in tying the game in the seventh with a pivotal walk, forcing home the equalizer. Coach Brian Stroble praised the collective effort of his team, noting how the contributions came from both seasoned players and freshmen alike. “Our seniors came through and played well,” he stated.

As the game progressed into extra innings, freshman Connor Chenevare took the mound and faced the pressure with poise, pitching through the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings and allowing only one earned run. The ninth inning became a pivotal moment for Jonesville, with Baker reaching base and stealing second before Young's final hit brought him home, leading to a jubilant celebration among teammates. This victory marks an important milestone for Jonesville, as they aim for their first regional title since 2024, following a successful run that included winning the Division 3 District 82 championship.

“We’re going to keep practicing,” Baker emphasized, highlighting the team's commitment to continuous improvement as they prepare for the upcoming championship game.
