Justin Herbert Sits Out Throwing at Chargers OTAs for Precautionary Reasons
Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, who recently returned to voluntary OTAs after missing the initial phase, opted not to throw during Tuesday's practice. This decision was made as a precaution to safeguard his arm.
During the session, Herbert focused on refining his footwork and practiced his throwing motion using a green medical ball during individual drills. In team activities, he participated by handing off the ball but refrained from making any throws.
The 28-year-old quarterback explained, “It was an opportunity to rest today and work on my footwork. Something that we talked about yesterday and probably maybe once a week, something just to do.” He added, “I think it's just being smart about my arm. Understanding that it's June and there's a lot of time to train and to work.” According to Herbert, head coach Mike McDaniel supported the idea of using this time to enhance his footwork without the pressure of throwing.
With Herbert sidelined from throwing, quarterbacks Trey Lance and DJ Uiagalelei took the opportunity to split the reps. Lance, who re-signed with the Chargers on a one-year, $6.75 million deal, completed his first four passes during 7-on-7 drills, though he narrowly avoided an interception. Uiagalelei made a standout play, delivering a flawless pass to JaQuae Jackson that went over the outstretched hands of veteran safety Derwin James.
As the team prepares for the upcoming season, which boasts one of the most challenging schedules in the league, maintaining Herbert's health will be crucial for their success.
