Karl-Anthony Towns Shines as Knicks Take Command in NBA Finals Against Spurs

The New York Knicks have firmly established their dominance in the 2026 NBA Finals, edging the San Antonio Spurs 105-104 in a thrilling Game 2. This victory, fueled by an impressive performance from Karl-Anthony Towns, gives New York a 2-0 series lead over Victor Wembanyama and his team.

Towns showcased his prowess on both offense and defense, earning accolades from former NBA great Charles Barkley, who noted the stark contrast between Towns' current performance and Wembanyama's struggles. “Wemby’s in shock right now,” Barkley remarked. “It’s probably been a long time since he got his ass kicked like this. Wemby’s spinning. He’s 22. He’s gonna own the league soon. But right now, big KAT is just taking his ass to the woodshed. Plain and simple.”

Barkley didn't hold back in his assessment of Towns, declaring him the most valuable player of the Finals thus far. “He was criticized in Minnesota,” Barkley said. “He was criticized in New York. But the MVP of the Finals is gonna be Karl-Anthony Towns. He played two of the best games I’ve ever seen a big man play. That man earned his flowers.” Towns finished Game 2 with 21 points, shooting 8-of-12 from the field, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc, along with 13 rebounds and four assists. This marked the first time a Knicks player had achieved a 20-point double-double in a road NBA Finals game since Dave DeBusschere in 1973.

Wembanyama acknowledged the difficulty posed by Towns and the Knicks after the game, stating, “It’s very different from previous series. It’s bringing us into difficult areas because they’re good players, he’s a good player. We need to figure it out.”

New York's latest victory has further solidified its legacy in the playoffs, as the team now boasts the second-longest single-season postseason winning streak in NBA history and has secured eight consecutive road playoff wins. They are also the first team since the 2017 Golden State Warriors to achieve 13 straight playoff victories, a feat that ultimately led to a title for Golden State. The Knicks are now just two wins away from their first NBA championship in 53 years, with their current road winning streak tying the record set by the 2000-01 Los Angeles Lakers for the longest in a single postseason.
