Kelsey Mitchell Shines with 25 Points as Fever Defeat Dream in Commissioner’s Cup Opener

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Kelsey Mitchell delivered a standout performance, scoring 25 points, including 11 consecutive points during a pivotal third-quarter stretch, leading the Indiana Fever to an 83-71 victory over the Atlanta Dream in their first game of the Commissioner’s Cup tournament. This win marks the Fever's defense of their title and showcased their resilience following a tumultuous week.

Alongside Mitchell, Aliyah Boston contributed significantly with 19 points, seven rebounds, and three blocks, while Caitlin Clark added 17 points along with eight assists and seven rebounds. Mitchell's impressive shooting, hitting 11 of 15 attempts, also earned her a place in the WNBA's exclusive 5,000-point club.

The Fever's victory came after a challenging period that included a team meeting following a recent loss to Portland, during which tensions arose between Clark and head coach Stephanie White. Indiana's defensive strategy proved crucial; despite entering the game with a season average of 89 points allowed, they managed to restrict the Dream to their lowest total of the season.

Atlanta had briefly taken the lead in the third quarter after trailing 38-29 at halftime, but Mitchell’s scoring run helped solidify Indiana's advantage. After a timeout called by White, Boston’s block led to a quick basket, and Clark's timely three-pointer pushed the Fever ahead 47-43, setting the stage for Mitchell's scoring surge that stretched the lead to 58-43.

Looking ahead, the Dream will face the Washington Mystics on Saturday, while the Fever prepare to take on the New York Liberty the same day.
